For a period of two years I was unable to play my cello because of an injury to my shoulder – probably a ‘repetitive strain injury’. The result of this was unexpected: I began to compose short pieces for piano on the encouragement of Henry Zajaczkowski, whom I had asked to teach me music theory but soon steered me into composition. I first wrote them on paper as I sat at the piano and then transferred them to computer using Sibelius.
After two years my shoulder recovered enough to start playing again and since then I have not written anything. At about this time I had lent my music room to a friend, William Bell, who was auditioning singers for an opera he was about to put on in Cheltenham. The pianist was Richard Black and listening through the door, I thought, what a wonderful and sensitive pianist he seemed to be. When they had finished I asked Richard if he would mind playing some of my pieces. I had never heard them played by such an expert pianist and sight reader. It was very exciting for me and, he said, intriguing for him. I asked him if he would record all my pieces and he agreed. The audio recordings – not all the Opus numbers – are added where they exist. None of the pieces has been published. I just hope that a few people will enjoy playing them and I would welcome any comments, even if critical!
